The Inns and Outs of Kitchen Renovations

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

A kitchen renovation can make a remarkable difference to your home, make your kitchen easier to use in a functional manor and turn a drab old kitchen into the modern kitchen that you have always wanted.  Kitchen renovations are an economical alternative to getting a completely new kitchen.

Renovations are common for those on a budget and people moving into older style properties as often Victorian style kitchens often look strange when integrated with new style appliances.

A kitchen renovation can include:

Renovating your kitchen can take time, especially if you are going to do the job yourself.  You should therefore ensure that you have made alternative eating arrangements, as normal kitchen usage is unlikely.  This obviously depends on whether you intend to carry out a complete renovation, or just a quick spruce up.

The cost of a kitchen renovation will depend on the state of your current kitchen, how much work is involved, the quality of the materials used and the size of your kitchen.  The cost will also vary depending on whether you will do the work yourself, or if you decide to get a professional to do the job.

If you choose a professional kitchen renovation, you should ensure that the company has a builders licence and that they use quality materials.  Some companies offer guarantees on workmanship and quality.  This will ensure that you receive a good job and a kitchen that will last.  You should confirm timescales and make sure that the price quoted is final to avoid unexpected costs.

The amount of experience of the builders, plumbers and electricians a company uses is vital to the quality and total outcome of your kitchen.  Most kitchen renovation companies have photos of kitchens they have renovated before; this will help give you an indication of what they are capable of and whether they are the right kind of company for you.

2010 Trends in Kitchen Design & Renovations by Innova Kitchens and Baths

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

2010 is looking to be a very exciting year in kitchen design trends.  In this article, we explore some of the most exciting trends in design aesthetic and functionality.

One trend that is continuing to gain momentum in 2010 is the emphasis on green solutions.

In countertops, materials such as ECO by Consentino that utilizes recycled materials such as porcelain, mirror, glass, and stone scraps will increasingly be seen.  In tile, Italian series’ such as Feel, Glam, Stream contain a pre-consumer recycled content of 20%, while a series called Charcoal is utilizing 40% recycled materials.

Green is also the word in cabinetry.  For example, think bamboo; A solution Innova recently used in a client’s kitchen renovation.  Other green cabinetry solutions include Ecowood; A sophisticated series of real wood stria composites using a revolutionary green technology.  Ecowood’s exotic finishes include  Macassar Ebony, Teak, Mahogany, Zebrawood to name but a few.

Other trends in kitchen cabinets include textured laminates, as well as high glosses, and mixed finishes.  When  it comes to mixed finishes, think both colour and texture such as high gloss whites mixed with dark wood accents.  And the dark wood finishes?  Out are the chocolates and kahluas, and in are the sophisticated greys.

For kitchen cabinetry lighting,  LED  solutions are lighting the way.  LEDs  save energy, and provide years of usage before any of the LEDs have to be replaced as opposed to the older halogen puck lighting which have short life spans and operate at elevated temperatures.

Cabinetry functionality trends continue with drawer solutions over doors in base cabinets, and metal rack pull-outs for pantry and base cabinet solutions. And those blind corners where you had to get on your hands and knees to reach to the back?  The Le Mans System solves that problem.  However, the hottest trend by far in cabinetry solutions are servo drives;  An electronically driven systems that opens your drawers with just a touch of your hand…

Article Regarding Kitchen Renovations

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Kitchen renovations are an essential expense for homeowners in Australia. This is because a few simple changes can alter the whole look and feel of these rooms.

For kitchen renovations the fashion is leaning towards sprucing up rooms that function perfectly but that are showing signs of age and wear and tear. The kitchen is one of the most frequently re-modeled rooms in a house. It is also one of the most used rooms, which elevates an interesting point. It may be that it always gets a remodeling job because it is one of the busiest rooms in the home and therefore looks ‘used’ fairly quickly, but how do you renovate such a busy area? Everyone gathers in the kitchen it is true, but this part of the kitchen’s function can easily be moved elsewhere. This is not so with the other kitchen functions: i.e. food preparation, storage and meal clean-up. For a real renovation these functions will have to be moved to a temporary ‘kitchen area’. Advance planning will be requisite to set up a second ‘kitchen’ before you dismantle the first. The fridge will probably have to be moved out of its spot in the kitchen but not be able to travel too far due to its large size! You will also need a sink, a microwave and an electric toaster oven that is outside of the kitchen. For a sink, you could look to your laundry room or a second bathroom. Both areas can be scour out enough and remain unused for the duration of the few days when you will have no water, fridge or stove in your kitchen. Possibly the top of the washing machine can double as some counter space. You will also need to draw up a plan of menu’s that can be easily prepared, brought in or heated up. Having to eat out should be avoided as it will involve some clean-up or clothes changing that will waste too much time. In preparing for the Reno itself, it is always a good idea to make three lists. These will include the features that you like about your old layout, the features that don’t like and the new ones you want to include. Familiarize yourself with the latest innovations on the market. Appliances with the new EnerGuide label will save you money on your energy bill. Consider new lighting, would you benefit from concealed-under-the-cabinet lighting? New compact fluorescent light fixtures are four times more efficient than standard bulbs. It is very inexpensive to replace only the cabinet doors on all your kitchen cabinets if you do not plan to alter the layout; check the Internet for details. If you are changing your layout, ensure you follow the triangle set-up of stove, sink and fridge, but before you go to any of this trouble – double check that you will really be spending the money where you want it. Remember, paint, lighting and new cupboard doors are inexpensive and make a big difference!

Above are some of the great ideas for kitchen renovations in affordable price will compliment your kitchen’s beauty.
